I want to backtrack a little bit. Our June magazine is out and we're working on July right now, but I'd like to take a moment to talk about this year's Great Women of Gaming, featured in our May issue.
Writing about all of these women was so inspiring for me, and I feel honored that I was able to speak with them, hear their stories and share them with CEM's readers.
Each woman truly is great. They've each achieved success, overcome obstacles and shown that hard work, dedication and perseverance will take you far. They may have been inspired by each of their own mentors or female leaders, but for the younger generation, they are our path pavers.
I also was able to read over the nomination materials for the GWOG submissions, and I gotta tell you, I do not envy our judges. It was close and a tough decision. How can you judge greatness? Rank success or commitment?
The first nomination letter and bio I read was for Ms. Libby Francisco, COO of the Tohono O'odham Gaming Enterprise. Her story immediately struck me and I was humbled by her journey to where she is now. She grew up in a large family with six siblings and lived in a one-bedroom house. Her first job was at age 13 and she had working-class parents who didn't have the privilege of higher education. Yet she went on to attend an Ivy League school, Stanford University. Through the years, she persevered, overcame her own personal barriers and is now the respected COO of the Enterprise as well as a committed mentor.
All of the women's stories are a little different, but each of them has achieved greatness. If you haven't had a chance yet, please take the time to read about these fantastic women. Pass it on to young women (or men!) you may know getting started in the industry. And keep an eye out for other women that may fit the bill to be considered for next year's Great Women of Gaming Awards.
