If courting your customers was more like hockey, direct marketing would be a lot easier. There would be three periods of interaction: a beginning, a middle and an end. There would be a system to rank teams. There would be winners and losers. In hockey, there are victories, bruises and the penalty box. Similarly, all can exist in courting your casino players.

It also has attendees feeling disillusioned and some quality event producers feeling like the proverbial redheaded stepchild of the industry. I think it’s fair to say the gaming industry is heading for a crisis in the conference and expo arena.

More people than ever before visited one of the casino industry’s largest events, the International Casino Exhibition (ICE), in late January to witness some of the sector’s latest and best innovations. The three-day show took place at London’s Earls Court Exhibition Centre with organizer Clarion Gaming revealing that attendance hit an all-time high to continue ICE’s record of sustained growth for the eighth consecutive year.

But there are several ways to own casinos, and with the ascendancy of private equity in recent months, we are likely to see a far more diverse casino-ownership landscape over the next decade.
